Can the government garnish my checking account for a student loan without letting me know first?

They could, sure. But they probably won't. They tend to go after tax returns.

We had a car that was repossed and we owed $ 4,800. We were contacted by the lawyers representing the company to set up payments. We did,we have been paying $ 50 every month since September.Yesterday we found out that our account had been frozen,we called the lawyers and asked if they had been receiving the $50 payments and they said yes.. we decided we would set up a $200 payment so we would pay off the loan faster. Later yesterday we found out that the lawyers had taken all our money from our account with out our authorization. They used a forced cheque. Can they do that? Is there anything we can do to fight this?
Thanks
