The "grate" at the back of our Amana dryer is burning and leaving "grid marks" on our clothes. It particularly happens to fleece material.

You can see from the image the dark spot on the silver "grate". The silver is slick, but that spot has bits of burnt fiber stuck to it.

Any idea on how to easily fix this?

Your unit is overheating or is having lint fires.

Clean entire unit of lint and make sure the dryer vent to the outside is clean. The test the temperature control.

A few questions:

1. To clean the unit of lint, I am assuming I clean the trap, trap area (vacuum it), the outside vent and the associated piping. Did I miss anything (ie. Have to take the unit apart)?

2. What are lint fires, and would they cause the clothing to stick and melt (mildly) to the silver grate?

3. How do I test the temperature control?

Thanks for your quick response!

Have to take the unit apart

Yes

What are lint fires, and would they cause the clothing to stick and melt (mildly) to the silver grate

Lint is combustible and will burn. It is possible that the lint caught fire in the dryer and this caused the problem. Most people never clean the lint out of there dryer or the vent pipe so this problem does happen from time to time.

How do I test the temperature control?

Usually this is difficult to do by a homeowner since they do not have the correct equipment to do the testing with.

It might be cheaper for you to just replace the thermostat in the dryer especially since you will be taking it apart to clean to start with.

Post Exact model number and I will see if I can locate a parts diagram for you.

Out of curiosity, what tool(s) are used to test?

Is a "Limit Thermostat" the same as the thermostat in question? I would assume there is only one thermostat in the unit??

No there are two others with a choice of one out of two depending upon the model.
