I was wondering if anyone knows if my 96 kia sephia 1.8L DOHC engine is interference or non interference. This would greatly help me whether to fix my car or not.

I found a document that states that it IS an interference engine.
Clipped out the important part.

Sephia
1994-95 1.6L 4-Cyl. (SOHC) * T185 TCK185 105,000 (CA) 60,000 (Exc. CA)
1996-97 1.6L 4-Cyl. (DOHC) * T179 TCK179 105,000 (CA) 60,000 (Exc. CA)
1995-97 1.8L 4-Cyl. (DOHC) * T179TCK179 105,000 (CA) 60,000 (Exc. CA)

* - Interference engine. Other interference engine applications may exist which are not indicated here

You could probably just call the Kia dealership and ask them to verify this

Yes, it is an interference motor. However, I actually witnessed an interference motor that was not damaged when the timing belt broke. The driver was approaching a stop sign and somehow lucked out.

Well sure.. if it breaks at just the right time... but I wouldn't risk it ;)

That's what we said! Lol But the customer insisted, so we put the belt in, set the timing... it fired right up and they've been driving it since. Stranger things have happened, I suppose :)
