I am a full time student, I get a pell grant and VA grant. I do not work. I have a child.

You may file Head of Household if you:

1. Are considered unmarried at the end of the year (December 31, 2007);
2. Paid more than 50% of the cost of maintaining the household for the year;
3. A qualifying person lived with you for more than 50% of the year.

Based on the information given, the amount of your Pell Grant that was not used for education expenses is taxable income that you may have used to maintain the home. As long as you meet the requirements above (1, 2, AND 3), you qualify for head of household.

See Publication 201 (2008) Exemptions, Standard Deductions, and Filing Information for the definition of a "qualifying person" to be sure you have met that requirement.

Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education has more details regarding the taxability of your Pell Grant.

Both of these publications can be found at Forms and Publications (http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/index.html).

Please let me know if you need more information.

1. You may be a dependent if someone is supporting you, then you are not head of household.
2. If you are a degree candidate and if the financial aid (includes scholarship and fellowship) is for tuition fee, other fees, books, supplies and equipment, then it is not taxable. For a degree candidate aid for boarding and travel are taxable.

More than likely, you have NO taxable income.

If someone else is providing you support (parents or boy friend), THEY may be able to claim your child as THEIR dependent if they can show they provided more than half of the child's total support.
