I have a yellow gold 18kt ring with a ruby. It has a crown stamped on the inner band with the letters HMS. What does it mean?

I have a yellow gold ring with an opal mounted in it. It is stamped HMS and I am not sure of the karet weight of the gold, because it is not stamped in the shank. How do I find out the Karat weight of the gold?
