If you decide to prepare simple taxes for other people for the tax season what should you do?

Go to H&R Block and sign up for the class to be a Tax Preparer. (You can even sign up online) After that class you get a certificate and you can legally sign tax returns.

I do lots of people's taxes and I am not a Certified Tax Preparer.
I have an accounting degree and know what I am doing though. I am not sure if you legally need to do anything to prepare someone's taxes. And if you do I would like someone to provide a link that proves so because I don't think it takes anything but taking a course in federal tax to legally prepare someone's taxes. Hey if I am wrong please let me know and state how you can prove so.

Anyone can prepare a federal tax return, with or without training, for others.
Not sure about the various states, but feel most follow the same rule.

You can prepare but you can't sign for them unless you're a licensed preparer
