Hello, I would sincerely like to help my 14 year old niece. She is traped in a miserable
Home situation, single mother. b-polar, very unstable, verbally abusive, a very negative,
Tough life for her. How can I get her out of this home? I've been married for 20 years, have two children, would like to have her live with us, but she's only 14. Please help,
Thank you, Uncle

You petition the Family Court - or the Court in your area that handles such matters - for custody, citing exactly what you have said, that she is being abused. You must, of course, have proof. I don't know where the father is in all of this but he could also have a say.

Has CPS been notified of the situation? That is very often the first step because no matter how "bad" the mother is, she will probably be very, very unhappy if simply presented with a custody petition - and that's if the Court will allow you to file for custody without a CPS review.

Or would the mother consent to allowing the child to live with you with some sort of guardianship agreement?

Thank you for your prombt response, The dad is basically out of the picture, her mother is
Cronically unemployed, and doesn't take her meds for her Bi-polor, she is completely wacked out. I've been told that to get CPS involved would be a mistake, and could actually make her life worse than it is already. The abuse is verball, the poor kid is so beat down, I'm concerned for her future. Thank you, Uncle
