View Full Version : Low pressure in standing shower and toilet.

I have good pressure to the shower (found that out by taking off the valve assembly for the shower without having the water turned off at the main). However I do not have good pressure at the shower head (yes, I removed the head) or the toilet. I think the crossection of pipe that the shower valve connects to is clogged with limescale. I'm not sure what this piece is called, how difficult it will be to replace (I'm handy) and whether or not I could salvage the part by soaking it in lime-away.

If that is even the problem or I've maybe overlooked something I'd like some advice here.

Appreciate it in advance.

This is probably two separate issues unless you have good hot pressure at the shower, do you? More likely than the pipe being clogged is a clogged mixing valve in the shower. Remove clean or replace the cartridge. Check the water pressure and volume at the stop valve below the toilet tank. Tell us how the toilet supply pressure is there. How long does it take to refill your tank after a flush?

I have bad pressure at the shower head both hot and cold, doesn't make any difference when I turn it back and forth.

Mixing valve! That's what its called! Thanks it looks like it's pretty well soldered in there though

I will check the toilet pressure this evening, the tank only refills intermittently... if I flush two or three times in succession it won't refill until I turn off the supply valve to it for a while (5-10 min) and then turn it back on it refills like my other toilet (aka like a champ!)

Thanks, I appreciate the help.

What type of ball cock do you have,( see images) Regards, Tom

the type in the image labled 400A

That would be a FluidMaster Ballcock. This ballcock has a rubber seal, that the opening can swell shut and restrict the flow. Purchase a FluidMaster Seal,(see image) #242 and turn the water off to the tank. Twist the top off and pry the seal out and replace it. (see images).
Before you install the seal and with the old seal off turn the water on to flush out the supply and valve body. Button it up, turn the water back on and give it a flush. Working better now? Regards, Tom

I think the toilet I have figured out. It isn't triggering at all unless I shut the water off, wait and turn it back on. The pressure is good going in so I'll take the $20 dive and replace the internals..

This is what I'm dealing with in the shower...

This does not look like something that will be easily replaced(hope I'm wrong)... the ball(on off hot cold) and everything (springs and grommets) seem to be fine.

Does anyone recognize what that mixer valve is and how can I clean or replace it?
