I have a collection of old country school books--What can I use to safely clean them--remove years of grime and make them look like new?

Q: How should I clean my old books?
Answer(s) to this Question (1 / 1)

Mildew
If you find mildew on old books, spray a cloth with disinfectant and wipe lightly across book cover. For leather bound books, use a mild shampoo and water.

Hi, gradmafern!

Are these hard bound or paper bound books and what do you mean by "grime", please? It would be helpful to know those things.

Some of that "grime" may actually be a patina that is normal and expected by collectors and cleaning with liquids of any kind may actually do more harm than good.

Thanks!

The books are mostly Hardback, but a few are soft covers!

Thanks!
