There should be only one comma in that sentence. Hmmmmmmmm, which one is correct?

Well actually, if the "and text talk" was an interjection, it would be grammatically correct. And I realize that I'm grasping at straws, but come on, SOMEBODY's got to be on Tal's side =D

People really hate my version.

Probably because I'm telling them that they're acting like children in an adult forum, really.

I think part of the problem is that they *are* children and texting is their world outside of here. With the advent of more and more web-enabled portable devices we can sadly expect more text-talk not less. <sigh>

I really have to wonder how the kids are getting a passing grade in school. Not only is it text talk, many can't even spell a word correctly anymore. I'm not saying all kids/teens are like this, but there sure are a good majority of them, I've noticed. It's too bad.

Also, apparently the use of capital letters, puntuation, and paragraphs have gone out the window too! I guess they are used to "spell check." Is there any such thing as translate this into English so I can read it, check? LOL!

Personally I can't read through stuff slowly and so when they use a lot of txting it gets to where it can't be followed so then it is difficult to give a reply. Then if it is something I really want to reply to I have to refer to the other posts to get what is going on. I don't mind a couple texts here and there but every third word or so is just too much!

What drives me nuts is when they are not only using text talk, the questions are 3 mls. Long, and there is no capitals, no puntuation, and no spaces! I often won't bother. It just gives me a headache!

Mynachlog-ddu Old Contemptible (7.2)

Easily recognised - it has to be kept in a glass jar as it will eat through cardboard or steel. If left open to the air it will start dogs howling within a seventeen mile radius. Designed as a cheap high explosive in the dark days of the Somme, it is still used as a cheap alternative to the phosphorus needed in tracer rounds and a malleable (if somewhat unstable) plastic explosive. Highly dangerous and strictly illegal, any reports of the whereabouts of any 'Old Contemptible' may be rewarded by a cash bonus.

Duty charged per kilo: None. Illegal Cheese.
Punishment for illegal ownership: Imprisonment and/or psychiatric evaluation.

Is there anything we can do about people who post run on sentences that just don't ever seem to end they just keep going and going while the describe the entire ordeal that their life has been put through without a period or comma to help us older folk and english speaking people understand what they are trying to convey without losing our breath or minds

Alty
Jan 13, 2009, 01:41 PM
No Romefalls there is nothing we can do to stop people from posting run on sentences with no punctuation so that we old foggies can read the post and then respond accordingly it's just a fact of life

Yes, but did he learn from his mistakes?

You have to question why he failed? After all, it was an English class, what was the teacher teaching? Was he listening? Was he too busy texting during class? If so, why didn't the teacher take away his phone? Blah, blah, blah. I mean, it can't be his fault, right? ;)

I have failed every time I tried, all my text messages goes on to 2-3 messages because it is so hard to not correct spelling mistakes and/or punctuations!

I am not that good with my English but to actually make myself shorten words Eeeeeks that's like killing a language.. can't ever do that.

:( but forcing myself to do it, so that other people don't get fed up reading my lengthy messages. :)

Jan 14, 2009, 09:41 AM
I'm the same way Firmy. I literally cannot do it, that's why I don't text, it would cost me a fortune because I'd have to type complete words.

And while we're on the subject - I don't understand the use of "stay" in place of "live." I ask where a person lives and get a blank stare. Where do you stay, that they understand.

And when did the word youse come into practice? I've come to understand it's the plural of you. For example, if I'm alone, "What do you want?" If I'm with a partner, it's "What do youse want?"

Text speak - I have no idea but I find the English (or semi-English) language is becoming more and more confusing.

And then there's the whole "my sister on my father's side, my sister on my mother's side" confusion.

How do you differentiate between chat speak and just poor grammar and spelling?

Alty
Jan 15, 2009, 11:40 AM
Artlady, I understand what you're saying, but, really, I wouldn't be able to help that person because I really don't understand chat speak. I can't get my head around it, they might as well be writing in a foreign language because that's what it amounts to for me.

Most times, when someone posts and english is their second language, I can tell, and I do make an effort to understand what they are writing, but chat speak is often just laziness, not the inability to write complete words in complete sentences. Most times, when asked, the person using chat speak can come back and write in proper english.

I usually ask them to re-write their post, if they can't or are unwilling, well, hopefully someone who can understand the post will come along and help.

My sister on my mother's side means we have the same mother but different fathers. Father's side is same father, different mothers.

ArtLady, I will answer the serious questions if I can, but I do remind them that chat speak/text speak is against the rules here! They are suppose to read the rules when they join. Some will appologize and use proper English, so we know they can actually spell if they want to. It's just a matter of being lazy. Many will get nasty with you, and tell you they will talk the way they want... after calling you names. These are the ones I won't bother with. If it happens on the legal boards the OP is asked not to speak in chat or text speak. Poor spelling is you. Text speak is U.

And, yes, people have come onto the boards and criticized other people's spelling, including on the forum help board. It was interesting because the "correct spelling" person used atrocious grammar - but that she didn't see.

I don't really know what the other boards do - I don't like chat/text on the legal board and it's very hard to take someone seriously, particularly when the person is giving advice, when there's a lot of "cuz" and "u" going on.

So true Starby. We deal with this a lot on the teen threads. When I go to the adult sexuality threads and someone is posting in chat speak, well, that's a pretty big sign that they aren't 18 and shouldn't be posting there.

We get a lot of young people here, and I welcome their questions, and try to give them answers, but I'm not willing to spend an extra 1/2 hour of my time just trying to figure out what they are asking in their post.

If they can't be bothered to spend the extra time to write a clear post, then why should I spend time de-coding it?

It is funny that most things portrayed on TV are either French speaking Canadians,, or everything in eastern Canada! It's funny how people think we say "aboot" instead of "about." I've only heard one person say "aboot" once in my life (a newfie) other than the comedians on TV who are doing a stereotypical act. The Western Provinces are MUCH different than the Easterners. I say "eh" once in awhile when I'm trying to be funny... or something like... "that sucks eh?" But more often if I'm being more serious, I'll say "hey that sucks!" Means the same thing, but with "eh" I'm more often than not, making fun of the ones that use "eh" after everything they say.

The Eskimo thing is hilarious! I honestly had someone ask me one time if I was scared of Polar Bears when I went outside, or if we had actual stores or if we went out ice fishing everyday to catch our supper! Too funny! Hahaha! I've known people from the States that think we don't even have cars here! They think we go places in dog sleds, and we eat Walrus meat for dinner! Oh, and we all wear touques! I do appreciate the concept in theory but what are you going to do if someone with a very serious problem logs on and asks for help in chat speak?

First... I hesitate to throw around the word prejudice so easily. It dilutes and diminishes the meaning of the word.

If I wander onto a site that is in spanish or cantonese or anything but english... I don't think "those terrible, prejudiced people!"...

I think... well, they have a niche market and perhaps limited resources for their site, bandwidth...

So...

Yes, there are gray areas... btw's and lol's get passed all the time. Some experts and mods are more strict than others. Personally I don't care all that much until it becomes 2 much lik this an you no it isn't the fault of a skipped consonant here or there.

Short answer is life demands some restrictions most of the time. If you cannot speak in a manner that those offering you help (again... free help here... ) can manage... then maybe you need to seek other resources.

I have a refugee couple living with me, rent free. One speaks broken english, the other barely understands it and speaks less. I'm happy to give them the resources I can. If either posted on this site with textspeak, id turn them away.

Site rules. Its not prejudiced to ban textspeak. It is a restriction that might limit the usefulness of AMHD to some members... but not prejudiced.

It is prejudiced to kill the father, brothers, and sister of an 11 year old boy in the congo because he belonged to the "wrong tribe"...

I'm guessing maniriho wouldn't find the request for textspeak to be abandoned here to be a gross violation of his rights as a human... maybe that's just perspective.

Then again... if the site ever demands the proper use of capital letters and punctuation, well, it'll be a hard decision to make. I like my lazy shortcuts...

But it isn't my site or rules.

Personally, if you started using capitals I wouldn't know what to do. I like your uncapitalized posts, they are pleasing to the eye. Now, I myself cannot go without capitals, too many years of typing and having my fingers wacked with a ruler if I did it wrong. Darn typing teachers, they're all mean! :(

I'm impressed Starby, you pulled that off without a hitch, I couldn't have done it. Now I have a craving for Timmies, bad girl, and a nanimo bar, after my poutine, my heavenly, heavenly poutine (a heart attack waiting to happen!).

Did you hear that their talking about getting rid of the $5 bill and turning it into a coin too? How much weight do they expect us to carry? What will they call it? We've got the loonie, the toonie, are we getting a foonie?

Foonie foonie for foonie... banana fana for foonie... fe fi for foonie... FOONIE! They're insane!

Alty
Jan 15, 2009, 02:43 PM
Before we know it all of our money will be coins, we'll have to lift weights just to be strong enough to carry a wallet! :(

I thought they were being reasonable with the loonie, a bit insane with the toonie, but a $5 coin, have they lost it completely? Darn Canadian government, they won't be happy until they break our backs!

I say fooey to the foonie!

I'll email you when I'm done with all that, then we can talk without the "mommy, I want, mommy Jared hit me, mommy Sydney won't play with me, mommy, mommy, mommy". It's amazing, when they're born you can't wait until they say "mommy" for the first time, now I sometimes wish they didn't know the word! ;)

Tal, no worries, I've got a paper bag you can wear, I cut out holes so you can see, and another hole so you can breath. Hi Artlady.

I may be wrong, it's been a long time since I was a newbie, but I believe that the lounge isn't available until you reach 200 posts, or is it another forum that becomes available then, or am I completely off my rocker?

Anyway, come on in, the water's fine. Just a warning though, we're all a bit crazy, especially Starby, she's completely wacko! :)

KP, good job, I never would have figured that out.

The 'other' site I joined is full of all kinds of 'chatter':p

They are a more social site, but also have a great 'Expert' area also, kind of a split personality,so-to-speak.

The moderation is done by the long standing members, not just a few.. The whole entire community can request moderation of comments/questions,and copy/multiple 'similar' questions will be move to appropriate areas,or deleted outright.

The members who are 'tracking'/'stalking'/'TROLLING' in the site are quickly dealt with and removed,no matter their 'seniority' of status within the community. They even have a troll patrol, members who have specific names to their screen names who can be contacted in the idea of a 'moderator' but namely there for the reporting of troll like behavior.

I do rather appreciate that part of the site,no negativity from other members, just community spirit and fellowship, not judgementalism.(New word!! )

I love this site. I love the social aspect of it very much. I've made many great friends here, friends I talk to off the site, I cherish them, so glad I met them, wouldn't have were it not for AMHD.

The mods here do a great job, when I RIP something it's usually taken care of within minutes, that's amazing to me because I know all of you have lives to live, can't be here 24/7 but you're all on the ball.

LOVE AMHD! :)
