I have been searching everywhere for an answer on this. There does not seem like too much information on a septic system. We just moved to a house. It is about 10 years old. In the summer we extended our infiltrator system to make out septic a littlle bigger. Now all our plumming is running fine except one thing that has been bothering us. Our sewage pump runs a lot... sometimes after one flush of the toilet. Now it is Winter and very cold in Canada. We have covered our septic and have a decent amout of snowfall. Lately our pump has been going on when no one uses water? I am concerned about this. Also just in the last 3 days, our pump used to run for approx 1 minute each time. It is now staying on for about 5-6 minutes. We are not using more water? What can be happening. Should we be concerned. This is causing me so much stress. Please give us some insight as to what the problem can be.

Ejector pumps are controlled by a float switch and the float switch turns the pump ion by the level of liquid in the pit. The first thing I would check is the toilet tank. If anything's seeping past the flapper, or a leak anywhere, that would cause the situation that you have.

My wife just wrote in about this but she didn't explain it correctly. The pump would normally run for about 1 minute during the summer and fall, now that winter is here and we had a major cold spell (-30 and colder). We also had the field pumped out in November, and have bales covering the field with about 20" of snow. We noticed that the pump will stay on longer now, up to 5-6 minutes. Im not sure if there is a problem at the suction side of the pump or if the outlet side could be frozen. It does pump the water out of the tank to the field but it is taking a lot longer. Any suggestions?
