I'm being charged for a full months rent even though I have vacated by the 15th. No contract was ever written and I gave slightly less then a 30 days notice. My question is what amount am I obligated to pay, my landlord is my boss and I feel that if I don't pay in full he won't fire me but my hours will be cut, any help and or law precedents or any direction in finding the definition of the law would be appreciated.

You are required to give notice according to the same time frame you pay rent. If you pay rent every 30 days, the 1st of the month, you must give notice before the 1st of the previous month to vacate the following month.

For example - you give notice October 31st and pay rent for the month of November and you vacate December 1st.

Rent is not prorated and you have said that you gave less than a month's notice. You owe the landlord.

You did have a contract - it was an oral contract to rent month-by-month and it's enforceable.
