How do you calculate board feet? I understand Linear feet, but I don't get board feet and apparently neither does anyone else I know.:confused:

Board feet is just volume. Thickness x width x length.

The dementions rickj gave you are right... but one thing that you might not know is that in finished lumber, as opposed to rough cut, is smaller than the measurements that is assigned to it. A board that is 1 x 6 is actually only
3/4 x 5-1/2 a board that is 2 x 4 is actually 1-1/2 x 3 1-2, of course when you are figuring board you always multiply those two measurements by the length.This really should not affect you much in buying by the board foot unless you wanted precise measurements

Board feet is usually only used in "green" or rough lumber calculations. If you were to buy rough lumber from a sawmill they would sell it to you by the board foot.

A 4 X 8 Board Would Be 32ft
Basically You Multiply The Width And Length To Get The Board Ft. Now If You Get Into Inches It's a Little Harder To Figure, Hope This Helps, Nichols Trim And Carpentry

board feet measure is used in hardwood lumber... 1 boyfriend = 1" x 1" x 12".. 4/4 hdwd =1" / 6/4 hdwd =1 1/2" / 8/4 hdwd =2" etc... measue your width & length to determine square footage... then multiply by the thickness

correction to my post 1 board foot = 12" x 12" x 1" .... 1 square foot by 1" thick... figure the area then multiply by the thickness
