Two months ago my girlfriend and I signed a one-year lease on an apartment in Seattle when we moved here from out of state. We have since learned that the large apartment building we live in is unsafe. There have been as many as 3 breakins in a single day and single women have been harassed in and near the lobby. We want to move out but we have 10 months left on the lease and there are provisions in the lease that we have to pay attorney's fees. Is there a legal way we can get out of this obligation and move without having an adverse affect on our credit?

'Fraid not. Unless the lease indicates that there was supposed to be security provided and it hasn't been, you should have checked out the area.

I would suggest putting good locks on your doors and taking self defense classes.

Sorry, you can be held liable for the entire lease or until they rent your unit if you move out.
