I have a problem with my home network of 3 computers. I clicked on the "Set up a Home or small office" icon on my XP machine and it came up with an error that it couldn't renew my IP address.
I have manually renewd my IP and Subnet mask addresses, as ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew did not work.
I now have my main XP machine connected to the internet, but cannot connect my other two comps to the network
My knowledge on networking is minimal, I did everything from help in the internet. As I didn't know my Default gateway address, I entered 192-168-0-1 (from a help page on the web, is this likely to cause a problem?
Can someone please provide me with some help to get my network working.

When you received your new network adopter, to connect to your other wireless computers on your network, you need to run the cd that came with it. That will automatically create a new connection for you.
When purchasing an adopter, get the same brand as your router, which will make it much easier to set up. I have a linksys router and when I needed to connect to my upstairs computer, I bought a linksys adopter, and I did not have any problems setting it up. Please click this link, for more information. Thanks for the reply Dixierock, but it doesn't solve my problem. I have 3 computers, one of which is connected to the internet via an ADSL modem. My other 2 computers connect to this computer via a 5 port ethernet switch. I don't have a router (yet).
Since creating a new network via Network Connections and clicking on the Set up a home or small office network icon, I have not been able to link my sons computer to the network.
What info do I need to insert in the IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway fields in the properties box on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties Window , General Tab?

I am not sure how to setup a network, without a network adopter, that connects to a router. I pulled my information up by clicking on the monitor in the taskbar. Here is what I got→ ip address-192.168.1.109-subnet mask→255.255.255.0→default gateway→192.168.1.1 You can try this, but I think you will need to get lucky, before it works!

OK, the ADSL modem is probably the router too. They combine functions of modems, routers and switches in the same box.

On the working computer Start/run and type cmd
Then type ipconfig /all

On the title bar of this window right click click on Edit/select all
And then hit the enter key

Now use control V to copy it into the reply window to this message and we'll go from there.

Thanks for taking time to answer KISS & Chuckhole, I have ordered a modem router, and this will hopefully solve my problems. If not I'll be posting again soon. Lets hope I don't have to.
