I am a traveller with little money on a working visa in canada and I took a pen from a store and as I was leaving I heard code 88 over the loud speaker. No one approached me and I walked away fine.
I have never done anything like this before and I am worried that I will get caught as I have shopped in that store regularly and used my credit card there.
What does code 88 usually mean? And what are the penalties in canada?

Hello sammy:

In store lingo, code 88 means to restock the pens. Somebody just stole one.

Well I'm being serious, I'm scared because if the police get called I will be shipped out of the country and there goes my work visa..

Hello again, sammy:

I'm sure you are serious, but if the cops weren't called or you weren't stopped and confronted by store security, you have nothing to worry about.

Did you put the pen down or keep on walking with it? And, yes, there's a good possibility if you get caught shoplifting and convicted you could be asked to leave the Country.

I walked out of the store with it... am I still able to be caught now? Like do the contact the police about every incident?

Read what Excon said (what do you mean by "every incident"?)

Every poor person that walks out of the store with something, do the police get notified?
