It sounds like you set it for TDC on the exhaust, not the compression, stroke.

It has a over head cam at one end you have the distributor that only goes in one way the other end of the cam you have the camshaft sprocket ,every time to turn the cam and you bring the word up that is on the sprocket the distributor points to number 4 not number 1

Number 1 is at the assesery belt end of the motor right don't the wires have a certain length so if its coils it has to fit that way if its wires it has 4 lenghs?
You should see the word up guess where that goes and two marks opposite each other the two marks should be flat and parallel with the plastic cover behind the cam gear. You may want to check a manual or the internet for pics.

What is the compression 95 lbs or better?
0 on 2 valves or more? Is bent valves you didn't get the cam posision wrong to the crank
And /or turn the motor over with the started
Forget the distibutor were they fit one way
That can't go wrong OK? Always turn the motor by hand if it is a new install procedure
For you ask autozone if yer motor bends valves if out of time and turned over some motors wonts some will depend on what one you got OK?
