What's your spouse nationality? Are you living together?
How long you've been married?

Most important issue, is there a binding contract agreement with your sponsor on this volunteer program? Normally there is a 2 years term that you must return to your home country and will be unable to change status or apply for any visa. Check this out first.

If you have j-1 visa.. then you can change your visa by J-1 Waiver...
