This may be correct if the amount of change in whatever value you are looking at is very small. There will always be some amount of management traffic on an active link.
I am using linksys router
Which one? Linksys makes numerous routers.
i am not able to secure my web key.
WEP key? If so, and you are attempting to configure WEP so other people cannot connect and use your wireless router, see the specific documentation for your router model. However, the basic gist of configuring secure wireless is:
Configure router and computer's network adapters for infrastructure mode.
Configure router for site name by setting an SSID. Also configure computers' wireless adapters to connect to that SSID.
Select a radio band 802.11 A, B, or G - suggest G.
Set a radio channel - suggest using 1, 6, or 11.
Select authentication/encryption mode - WEP, WPA, or WPA2 - suggest WPA or WPA2 intead of WEP as WEP is no longer considered secure.
Select "bitness" of encryption - more is better but must also be supported by computers' network adapters.
Set keys or passphrases for the encryption mode chosen - for WEP, configure a matching long random key, usually #1, on both the router and computers' network adapters.
Also my friend was able to login using my connection.
Your wireless router has not been configured for secure wireless connections.
Is it possible to hide the ip address
Maybe, but I don't know what this has to do with anything; obscurity does not lead to security. And, which address?

Maybe it is not the IP address you are talking about hiding. It is the station identifier - SSID - for your wireless router/access point. By hiding the SSID, it does not show up in the device discovery of nearby access points for other people to connect to.
