HI Ive been paying my rent for the last 9 months I've been in my apartment.IVE been paying it to the owner who's name is on the lease. Now there's a co owner (someone else) that came to the house with a letter from her lawyer stating that the owner who you've been paying your rent to hasn't paid the mortgage in 6 months and the house is on the erge of foreclosure, and it also states that to no longer give payments to the owner you've been paying to and to send payment to there office (the lawyer). NOw I called the owner and she sais she's been having problems paying the mortgage but to still give payments to her. Now Im here confused who to pay. I also just got in the mail a letter stating that the owner (who I pay rent to) is filing for bankruptsy so its even more confusing me. Can you please help me.

Hello b:

Your agreement is with the owner. THAT is who you are obligated to pay. WHAT she does with that money is none of your business.

Yes, you have to pay to the person named on the lease, that is your legal obligation.

If a co/owner wants to take over, they will have to sue the other owner, that is a issue between the two of them.

Until they have a order from the court, not a letter from some lawyer, you are obligated to pay the person named on your lease.

** except in California, where if they are in foreclosure you don't have to pay anyone.
