I have a 44" closet opening that previously had metal bi-fold doors on it. I have been to Lowe's and looked on line, but cannot seem to find doors to fit a 44" opening. Anyone know where I can find/special order them or have an alternative suggestion?

The existing opening being 44" and a replacement closest to it is?

If you can't find a door at the local 'brand name' stores,I would look for a lumber yard or hardware store that deals with doors.


I have ordered almost any size doors from my local yard and had no problems.(even short,custom.. etc)

Otherwise you might consider a smaller opening and frame the sides in,2 X 4's and drywall.

If you can't find any, make some. You can get hold of the hinges & runners from your local DIY store , they will have a template & assembly instructions included. If you can't find them, look for a supplier on the internet, I got some from a company called Hettich, I think it's a German company.

When we run onto that on a re hap we just downsize the jambs to fit a stock bi fold.

The cost of adding more onto the existing jambs usually cheaper then ordering a custom bi fold.

Just add to the existing jambs, capped with 1x4 pine inside jambs. The trim it out with casing on the added jambs and the header.

Looks very nice and solves the making a custom door.

If u are able to cut hollow core doors down, u can make them fairly ease. U would need a bench saw and 6 clamps. It can also be done using a power saw but is a little harder.

Measure the old doors to get the correct size for cut. After cut remove the veneer from the frame post u cut off. Using carpenters glue run a bead on one inside edge of door and one side of frame post. Slide into void made by cut and clamp. Leave set for about one hour. Repeat on other 3 doors.

U can pick the doors up already hinged for a 24" opening. U would need 2 sets. And u would get all the hardware u need packaged with doors.

It would be a lot cheaper than having the doors custom made.
