Is this a stand up model?

If it is,the knob on the side is for raising and lowering the wick,if the wick has enough life in it you can light it with a match/lighter.Lower the wick to where you don't get the black smoke and enjoy the heat!:)

Now for some tips:

Don't run the heater in an enclosed room.

Some people crack a window during it's operation.

Don't set it in a drafty area.

Invest in a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide alarm.

If you don't know the history of the heater, you may want to have the wick replaced, especially if it has gotten brittle.

Don't run them unattended.

Refuel outdoors.

Know how to extinguish the heater (turn it off) normally done by pressing a lever or some sort which drops the wick back into the chamber.

Before you light it, make sure the extinguish mechanism works correctly, if it doesn't take the heater in for service.

I firmly believe that kero heaters are a very safe and effective method for heating a home as a backup, but the heaters MUST be respected and maintained. Wouldn't want your cottage to burn down.
