If you did not ignore IRS letters, then the person may not be IRS agent. Why did they show up at your parents house and not at your home.

It is possible that his parents got the IRS letters and never bothered to let him know about it.

Further, tax scams be people posing as IRS agents are rarely done in person. They are normally attempted via email or the phone, so I suspect that the person claiming to be an IRS agent is in fact an agent from the IRS.

You can meet with him and check his credentials. A simple phone call to the IRS using a number from the website should verify whether he is whom he says he is.

As for your original question, jail time is unlikely. However, they know you exist, so expect to undergo a detailed audit, after which you will owe a significant tax bill.

You should immediately get professional tax help, either a tax attorney or an enrolled agent.

Do NOT try to represent yourself!! You NEED professional help!

Have you been filing htings like 941 forms or anyhting? If you have, it shows a little bit of responsibility on your part. If not, then you could be facing a bad situation. I may not be an expert, but I do know what has happened to us. We were self employed and had every bad accountant in the state doing our taxes for us. So eventually we decided to try ourselves and got so far behind, haven't been able to catch up. Now to have 3 yrs of taxes done the quotes we are getting are in the $25,000 range. GET AN ATTORNEY BEFORE YOU HIRE AN ACCOUNTANT!! GOOD LUCK!
