Our house is about 4 years old. Last night our bedroom and walk in closet went off. We checked the breaker downstairs and sure enough it was off. It is connected to a TEST button. We tried both the TEST button and to turn the breaker back on but it won't stay and it immediately goes off again. It does click when turned on so the switch itself is OK. We also checked and unplugged all the appliances - small TV, the phone and one side lamp. What could be the problem? The only other thing I can think of is during the summer months we had a portable AC plugged in in the bedroom. We didn't have a problem though and the AC has been stored away for the last three months.
Should we call an electrician?

Did you push it all the way off, then back on?

If the house is four years old, that tells me the breaker is probably an a.f.c.I. breaker wich means it is an arc fualt breaker for short. It is very sensitive and in my work I have ran into quite a few to be defective. I read that you unplugged everything on the circuit and that would be the first step. I would then replace the breaker with a new one but keep the receipt due to that not being the problem. If you aren't sure about ac single phase power than you should leave it to an electritian. If your confirtable the breaker will have a white wire coming off it on the ground buss bar, that will identify that it is an afci. If it just has a reset button than it is a gfi breaker. Make sure when installing the new one that the circuits nuetral connects to the breaker and not the ground buss bar and the neutral from the breaker does. If the breaker won't resett than the problem is in the circuit and not the breaker. You will want to ohm the circuit out by connecting one leed to the black wire and one lead to the white or ground while all the wires are disconnected from the panel. If you get a zero read or any value at all you have a short and you have a lot of digging to do. I would figure out if there has been any recent work done like cutting sheet rock or nailing siding on things like that. Good luck!

Yes, quite a few times but the it jumps right back to off. I hear the click when I try to turn it on but it doesn't stay on. It switches right away to off.

Could be a genuine arc fault, or more likely with such a new home the breaker is bad. There was a recall on some AFCI breakers a while back. I'd have an electrician come out and check to see what the problem is.

Its one of two problems already mention by the earlier posts. The arc fault is doiung its job or its defective. The cheapest approach is to buy a new breaker of same manufacturer and install it. If you still have a fault, then you will need to call an electrician.

I agree with ballengerb1, its either defective, or doing its job. Have a qualified pro come take a look at it.
