I was living out of my home for over four months waiting for my landlord to have the house cleaned of all concrete dust that was there from replacing under the slab plumbing, also a unsafe stove was promised to be replaced.both these problems were promised to be done in writing by my landlords lawyer. After 4 months in writing I told him I would be cleaning the house myself so my 10 year old son and I could get things back to normal.I waited one week for a response, not hearing from him I did the work and moved back in waiting for a new working stove.once the stove was replaced and it was time to pay rent I deducted expences off the rent such as gas from my temporary dwelling to work{normally my job is one block away from the house)12 miles one way,I also charged him for the cleaning of the house.just wondering... can I do that?thank you for your time.

I don't think you could charge for the gas. The cleaning maybe. If he decides to ding you for the rest of the rent and takes you to court to evict you, I sure hope you have a copy of the letter wherein his attorney agreed that he would have the cleaning performed for the house.
