Do you measure the distance of the bolts on the bottom of a toilet to the wall to get the measurement for the center of the drain off the wall?

I measure from the center of the bolt to the wall, as this distance will be where you line up the new toilet with the new toiulet's bolt-holes. It's easier to measure from here, and the bolts are not going to move, so the measurement is static.

You can but a more accurate measurewould be from the center of the flange back to the wall. Most will measure from 11 1/2 to 12 1/2" off the finished wall. Good luck, Tom

Yes, it is more accurate, I was just thinking it's harder to measure the new toilet for depth this way, as the holes for the bolts are going to be accessible on the new toilet to measure to the back of the tank.

The slots in the flange allow for "wiggle room" And to measure that way might leave you from /12 to 5/8ths of a inch off center. Regards and welcome to the Plumbing Page. Tom
