View Full Version : El. Dryer - Overheating heating element

dryerquestion

My Whirlpool dryer did not dry anymore and now the heating element gets so hot that it's glowing badly. If I would not turn it off, it'll probably burn. Do I need to change the heating element? Thermostat?
Thanks for any help!

dryerquestion - Lets do the easy checks first , you said that the heating element is getting hot , so that means that we need to check the lint screens, and clean them out. Check the vent system, the hose that goes out threw the wall and make sure it is not obstructed and check on the outside where the vent air comes to make sure it is not stuck closed and works freely. Another cause is overloading the tub with wet clothes. AND ANOTHER THING THAT I WOULD DO SINCE THE HEATING ELEMENT IS GETTING EXTREEMLY HOT AND YOU HAVE TO CUT IT OFF < I WOULD CHANGE THE HIGH TEMP> protector ( IT is on the top side of the caseing that the heating elermentis in , sometimes there are more then one, if these itemns are OK Or you have replaced a bad part, next thing to go to would be the thermostate checkout and possible replace. I hope this has helped and stay SAFE,that's 220 you are messing wioth :: Good luck and GOD BLESS ;;F.B.E.

Thanks much F.B.E.
Lint screen is all right. Could be the High Temp Protector... Is that the 2 metal knobs right by the heating wires? Looks like it. I could not tell if they are all right or not. Now, when cold, the heating wires get real hot and then just turn off. If I wait until it cooled down and turn it on again, same thing happens. If I try to turn it on when hot or warm, the heating wires do not heat up. I am wondering where the thermostate is. And how does it look like? I'll go to Sears and ask them as well. F.B.E, thanks again for your time and knowledge...
BTW, I have a Whirlpool LEW0050PQ

dryerquestion - The high temp protectors are on the outside of the canaster box that covers the heating element, they are usely on the top side . Some have only {one] others have [two}. The way you test one to see if iot is any good is the way Im fixing to lead you threw, DO you have a VOLT-OHM METER??
Ok , If you have the meter then here we go . #1- un plug the power cord first of all , you won't need power for awhile. #2- Remove the back panel off the dryer and place out of the way , Now take and set the volt-ohm meter to { RX1 SCALER) AS I said above the overheat protector is most likely on the top outside of the heating element cover,
#3 - To test to see if it is OK or not [ Take one of the wires off the protector and set the meter where you can see it , NOW TOUCH ONE OF THE METER PROBES TO EACH TERMINAL OF THE PROTECTOR> IF THE METER READS ZERO OHMS THE PROTECTOR IS GOOD {IF IT READS HIGH IT IS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDS REPLACED} REPLACE THE WIRE IF OK> #4- Now lets check the heating element to see if it has a { OPEN CIRCUIT OR IT IS GROUNDED ) ( { For
OPEN CIRCUIT - DISCONNECT THE WIRE S FROM THE ELEMENT ,NOW SET THE METER WHERE YOU CAN SEE IT , TOUCH ONE OF THE METER PROBES TO EACH ONE OF THE WIRE TERMINALS :: { IF THE METER READS BETWEEN 8 AND 20 OHMS IT IS OK< IF IT READS HIGHER THEN IT IS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDS REPLACEING:: NOW check to see if it is grounded, { REmove the wires from the TERMINALS ,TOUCH ONE PROB TO ONE OF THE WIRE TERMINALS AND THE OTHER PROB TO THE METAL CANSTER COVER OVER THE HEATING ELEMENT < IF THE METER READS HIGH IT IS OK <BUT IF THE NEEDLE SWINGS TOWARD THE LOW THEN IT IS NO GOOD AND NEEDS REPLACED << I hope you have been able to follow me so far ,If you have and all that we checked so far is good then we are going to the next steps;; { REMOVE THE TOP COUNSIL FROM THE DRYER AND WE ARE GOING TO CHECK THE ( THERMOSTAT TO SEE IF IT IS OK ) ( #5 - Again set the meter where you can see it , LEAVE VOLT-OHM METER SET TO { RX1 SCALE} REmove both the wires from the thermostat , NOW TOUCH ONE PROB TO EACH OF THE WIRE TERMINALS AND TURN THE THERMOSTAAT TO ANY SETTING BUT THE FLUFF DRY SETTING < IF THE METER READS ZERO THE THERMOSTAT IS OK <IF IT READS HIGH THEN IT IS FAULTY AND NEEDS REPLACED, } I Don't think that it is the START SWITCH OR THE TIMER SWITCH :: BUT if what I have given you don't work then get a stick of dimement and stick in vent and when the smoke clears ,guess what , the dryer will still be setting there , HAY Don't TAKE ME SERIOUS ON THAT <IM JUST JOKEING > Don't FORGET TO HOOK UP ALL THE WIRES WE TOOK OFF IN ABLE TO DIO THE TESTING < PUT THE DRYER BACK TOGREATHER AND HOOK UP POWER TOP IT AND LETS SEE WHAT KIND OF JOB WE DONE .> When you go to get the parts , take the { MODEL NUMBER AND THE MAKE AND THE SERIAL NUMBER WITH YOU < Here's WISHING YOU GOOD LUCK AND A BETTER DAY TOMORROW AND GOD BLESS , REMEMBER 220 volts STAY SAFE
LET ME KNOW HOW YOU COME OUT F.B.E.
