I have inherited a duerr log splitter from my father in law who is now in the nursing home with dementia and I would like to change the oil filter on it. I have the part # from manual which is #723-0405 filter element. The model # is 424/lcd/22 (249-623-003). Could you give me a number & name brand filter that I could purchase locally. Thank you. If you get the engine name and model you can usually match it up with a filter makers guide like Fram or Penzoil.

You need a hydraulic filter, not a cheaper oil filter. For my MTD log splitter, my local farm and fleet store sold me a Cross hydraulic filter, part no. 1A9021 for $9.99 - half the price of the MTD (maker of Deurr, Troy-Bilt, Yard Machines, etc.) brand. This one's made by Cross Mfg. Inc. Lewis, KS.
I haven't installed it yet, but it looks like the same thing on the outside.

Hi,
Cheapest place I found was:
MTD Lawn mower Parts, MTD lawnmower and MTD push mower parts (http://www.outdoordistributors.com/MTD/MTD_Main.html)
At $15.58. Did not look for sub even though I know someone made it for them. Still trying to build/rebuild a bookmark file I had at a place that I used to work at (they probably do not realize how much that HD was worth because I used it.)
Peace,
Clarke
