Plant them straight. Cut them back in the fall when you can see new growth at the base. Put a cage around the taller ones before they become too tall.

Never heard that one before.. I landscape... Rose is right.. plant them straight... try tying a light string around the middle while it is in full bloom... and cut back to an inch from the ground in late fall... good luck

My sister works in a green house. When the fresh shoots come up. They will need to debudded. I usually do this around Mothers day so I remember. You take the terminal but off every plant that has at least 5 leaves on it. That is the main straight stalk coming up.. There will be small leaves around it. Take the smallest at the top and with your thumb, roll out the terminal bud, the top most. This encourages growth on the tower branches. I make sure to do this to all the plants. You may have to come back and do the ones you miss, in about a week. You will see the difference once they start to grow again, you will not have one defined top leaf.. Then on fathers day or there's about you do this again. You not only will have a compact, stronger plant but one with any blossoms.

In the fall I do cut them down close to the ground. The most hardy plants will come back. I have always had just the yellow ones come back year after year. I live in north pa. hope this helps M
