My husband is the father of another child but he was asked to sign his rights up, which he did, by the mother because she got married and her new husband wanted to adopt the little girl. They ended up getting a divorce and her husband never adopted the little girl so now she is coming back to us telling us that my husband still has rights and that she is going to get DHR involved in the situation if he will not have anything to do with the little girl.

When my husband signed the paper work he was told to make 100% sure that this was what he wanted to do because there was no going back and changing it a few years down the road. What should we do? He signed the paper work and we never heard anything back that the paper work did not go through until the mother started calling us. If the paper work never went through wouldn't we have heard from someone besides her? Please help us!!

Did your husband ever appear before a judge? A judge is the only one that can grant a tpr. I don't what paper he signed.

Your husband has a financial obligation to his child regardless if he want to be in a child life. Is a child support order in place?

I think it is best for your husband to get a lawyer to find out what is going on.

I do not think a judge was present but a lawyer was. I am not sure where exactly he went because we were dating at this time, but I am pretty sure it was at a court house and the lawyer told him that the paper work would make the decision final and there was no going back on it a few years down the road.

The mother actually started contacting us after our first child was born, well she was a little over a year old but it was the first that she had heard of her. I have talked to her a few times but now I am not so sure that I even need to have contact with her. I just don't know what to do anymore.

No, he is still the father and is still liable for child support, not until the actual adoption takes place does it move from him to new father.

He may be able to fight having to pay any back support using this as a belief it was done
