Hi,

As I know from my salary statement we are paying some amount from our salary for SSN.I have a H1B visa.I got to know from my colleague that we got some money back at the end of the year.So I just want to know if I can get a SSN for my wife. She is on H4.

I will appreciate any help.

Your spouse is H-4 holder, so she is not qualified to obtain SSN. However, she is qualified for ITIN which can be obtained only for tax purpose, it must be submitted together when you file your tax return.
Read here: Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) (http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96287,00.html)

Thanks Lawanwadee for the reply.I wanted to confirm this that my wife is not eligible for SSN.
I have one more query. As I mentioned every detail in W-4 I hope the US government knows that I am filing tax jointly or is it like I have to explicitly tell them that we are filing tax jointly.

I have not mentioned any where else that we are filing tax jointly and I am not sure that we are filing tax jointly.

How can I check whether we are filing tax jointly or not.

You can file tax return jointly, that's the only way she will obtain ITIN. Otherwsie H-4 holders are not qualified for any of this.
