View Full Version : Broken drain

I was having a toilet and shower installed in the ground floor of the house (2 storey) with a solid floor (concrete). While the work was being done, the plumber commented that the foundations were wet. Today, he dug and discovered that the drain to the sewer from the kitchen sink, bath (upstairs) and toilet is broken.

The house is old (approx 100 years) and has a stone pipe draining into the sewer. What is the best way to remedy this? There are no unpleasant smells from the area, although the walls of the room over this drain have been damp for a long time -like a year. We thought this was due to a leaking sink, but this has been replaced recently and I wonder if the damp could be due to the broken drain.

Do you know what can be used to replace this drain i.e. what material?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

By "stone pipe" I assume you mean Terra-Cotta or Clay drainage pipes. I would remove the cracked and broken pipe and replace with PVC. I would transition from Clay to PVC with a Fernco Neoprene or Shielded Coupling, (See images) Good luck, Tom
