I have recently been contacted by a lawyer regarding a past debt. I am uncertain as to what it could be. About 4-5 years ago, I went through a divorce and was burdened with some serious financial debt. I could not repay, as I was only 22 and had and taking care of a new baby alone. The only option I had was to ignore the debt. I have since moved, and it is haunting me. Because it was so long ago, I understand that if I have a live conversation with anyone regarding these debts, it will bring everything current. Let me stress, I have not spoken to anyone about these debts, but I have received messages, and also my dad and boss. This is truly embarrassing and I do not know what to do. My company is going through financial hardship and I just received my last paycheck until things are better. My husband is also out of work. Considering that I will have NO MONEY to pay for groceries for my son, I obviously cannot pay anything additional. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Thank you

MarieMichigan, it will do you no good, if you ever talk to them, to stress that you do not have the money to repay, they don't care and will keep on pursuing you. But remember, this until they have a judgment against you for past debt, they cannot collect.

Ignore them. They will say anything, do anything to make you pay. Eventually they disappear for a while, and then someone else who has bought the debt, starts calling you and on and on and on.

Ignore them as long as you can.
