I am getting ready to install a new kitchen sink with a garbage disposal. It will also have a dishwasher connection. Is there any specific advice on how to make those connections in the smallest space?

DIY4u:

Use a BASIN WRENCH (see picture) to make connections at faucet and to install faucet.
Pipe waste line with pvc pipe and fittings.
Prime all joints and then cement fittings/pipe.
Install full-size cleanout using a union p-trap, an end cleanout, or a dandy cleanout.
Use putty at disposal strainer.
Install dishwasher into disposal (remove the knock out plug first, using flat screwdriver.. remove plug).
Install dishwasher with a high loop (as in picture below) OR use an air gap if an air gap is required in your area.

What type of sink and is it under mount or on top of the counter? Deep under mount can sometimes not line up with the old drain line coming out of the awll, Dry fitting is agood idea to test. Remember that the disposal has a side pipe to accept your dish washer but there is a plug inside that pipethat needs to be knocked out first. Also, many of us can go either way with high loop or air gap. Call your local building department to see what they accept in your area.

Is the plastic drain support on the dishwasher what you are calling a high loop? Do I need a separate trap for the second basin (w/o disposal), or is 1 trap for all OK? The vent goes into the wall and up and around window, I assume.

DIY4u...

The high loop is the discharge hose from the dishwasher getting looped and clipped to wall (make a hanger to hold pipe high) as high as possible under the counter and then run to disposal dishwasher connector (again... don't forget to remove the plug inside the dishwasher connector at the disposal). Or you may be required to use an air gap... but if wasn't present before this then you should just need to install the high loop to prevent disposal drainage from draining into dishwasher... ;)

You can use one trap for both sinks (see picture below). Be sure to include full-size cleanout under sink for future!
