I'm thinking of moving my toilet in my main bathroom. My home is a split level built in the late 50's, and this bathroom is a full bath located on the third level with a half bath underneath. The toilet in question is currently located directly opposite of the sink with about two feet between them. I would like to move the sink down towards the corner and place the toilet between the sink and the tub. How costly of a proposition would this be being that there is no concrete involved, and plumbing is accessible from above and below?

Yes it is a good idea to move the toilet.

What kind of drain pipe? Show us some pictures.

You said the plumbing is accessible from above and below but you do know this will involve pulling the ceiling out of the bath below and some wall demo too. Are you asking what a pro will charge or what it costs for you to do the work? If you go with pro get 3 estimates which will be more accurate than our guesstimates.

I am aware that drywall removal will be involved, however this is not an issue. A less than reputable contractor remodelled this bathroom in the mid 80's, improperly installing a tub surround (corian which does not come out past the tub leading to drywall damge) and failing to use greenboard. There is also some damage to the ceiling below due to older water leaks. I am looking for a rough guesstimate on moving this toilet to see if its worthwhile when I plan a total bathroom rehab.

If the room is getting gutted and the ceiling is coming out below you should only see about $350 to have the toilet moved.

Just to pop in and present my thoughts...

If I read this right, gkurcon said "I would like to move the sink down towards the corner and place the toilet between the sink and the tub"...

This suggests that the drain piping for the tub drain and the sink drain may also need to be re-piped or at least adapted too... depending on how it's piped now... as well as the toilet piping.

For sure, the lavatory drain will need to change and the water pipes relocated. The water pipe for the toilet will need to be re-routed as well.

Gkurcon... when you open up the floor or the ceiling can you post a picture of the pipes? I'm wondering how much cast iron and galvanized piping are left over after the poor remodel job??
