My brother-in-law has been treated for depression for 20 years and has had numerous breakdowns. He has not been able to hold onto a job, and had been living out of a pension from mother, sharing her house. Now the mother passed away, and my husband and I are concerned that he will not be able to keep up with house costs and his medicaid -- he is 44 years old now, and lives in Ohio. My husband and I live in Michigan.

Is my husband liable for his brother in any extend -- legally or financially?

Thanks

No - not unless he's in some fashion the brother's guardian or legal representative or unless there are joint obligations. If the brother in law doesn't pay the creditor will look to your husband (on joint debts).

Depending on your brother in law's exact condition it might be possible to get a law guardian appointed to assist him in his legal/financial/personal affairs.

Sounds like a heartbreaking situation.
