What is your opinion about the durability and aesthetics of cement board for exterior wall replacement of painted plywood for a cabin at 6500' elevation and high snow levels in winter? My internet research reflects common use of a stucco exterior finish on the cement board. Ugh! Doesn't seem appropriate for freeze/thaw/heavy snow application. My carpenter is recommending it. Please, please, please respond as soon as possible. I am most grateful.

Durability gets a 9 but aestetics get nearly a zero. You had painted plywood but you say you don't like stucco, not sure why but you are the cabin owner and should get what you want. Cement board will last a long time and pretty much look terrible in my mind. You could install siding made by a backer board company like Hardiplank. It will last loke cement because it has cement in it but it will look great. JamesHardie Siding (http://www.jameshardie.com/homeowner/siding.shtml)
