My soblings and I are planning to surprise our parents with an Alaskan cruise for their anniversary. As American citizens, do they need a passport for this? And if so, how the heck do we get them without giving away the surprise?

Under current rules, you need a passport if you fly to or from Vancouver, British Columbia, in conjunction with your cruise but not if you drive to Vancouver or sail round-trip from Seattle. It's wise, however, to check with a travel agent when you book your cruise. And it is recommend that one acquire a passport for Alaskan cruises.

Applicants traveling within two to three weeks can apply using expedited service at their nearest passport acceptance facility (http://iafdb.travel.state.gov/). Those traveling in less than two weeks who have not yet applied for a passport should contact the passport service by e-mail using the form at National Passport Information Center - Passport Status Inquiry (http://travel.state.gov/passport/about/npic/npic_896.html) or by calling 877-487-2778 for information and to schedule an appointment. According to the State Department, applicants should indicate on their application their travel plans and intended departure date
