They will take child support monies from social security checks. I don't know if they go straight to the social security office or not, but that would be a good place to start.
In my state a person has to have a judgment so that the money may be taken from the check before the person receives it, but like I said, it is worth a try.
If that doesn't work maybe they can give you some advice on where to start

I receive child support from my ex's ss disability. I never got any regular money from him until he started getting ss. Child Support Enforcement should take care of everything for you, send a request in writing and ask for proof of delivery from the post office. Make sure CSE knows you are sending a copy of the letter to ss also! Then call ss too! They may follow up on it for you if you tell them CSE isn't doing their job. Cover all your bases. I'm wonderinf if he didn't put the kids down as dependents though, because I believe ss would contact CSE or you directly.

By the way, when my ex was approved, I got a large retroactive payment. They calculate from the date he applied to today's date when issuing the first payment. As soon as he was approved I got funds within a matter of a few days and it was thousands of dollars.

Good luck to you and your kids. Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you!
