Hi,

I am a international student on F1 visa. I started my CPT now. I am working(client) in Illinois but my employer is in Florida. My W-2 will be from Florida.
My hourly rate is $30/hr, I worked for 120 hrs last month. What is my salary going to be for those 120hrs after the taxes ?
I think for F1 students there is no social security tax and medical tax. I don't know whether state tax applies for FL.

Thanks.

On F1/OPT you are exempt from residency for 5-years. You do not pay FICA taxes.

For income earned while in IL, you must report it on IL income tax return and pay IL taxes.
Florida does not have state income tax, you do not file FL income tax return.

Mike:

Florida has NO state income tax.

However, since you are working IN Illinois, Illinois state income tax applies. If your employer is NOT withholding these taxes, tell him to start. The Illinois state income tax rate is about 3%.

You will pay federal income taxes. At your current income level, you will pay somewhere betwwen 10% and 15%.

However, you ARE exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes. If your employer is withholding the Social Security and Medicare taxes, refer him to IRS Pub 519, page 46, and request that he STOP withholding these taxes and refund those taxes already withheld.
