View Full Version : Leaky bathroom sink drain

I recently installed my new bathroom sink and drain. After a day or so I found a puddle of water on the cabinet base. I took a flash light and found it was leaking from one of the connections. I am told to put silcone to stop the leak, but I'm not sure I should do so?

I believe the gasket is not doing it's job and I should replace it or put it on correctly.

What should I do?

You have the right idea, it should not need any other type of sealer, the washers are made to work so take it apart, look for something wrong like a crooked washer, make sure there is not a crack or split in the PVC trap, it that is the kind you used. Put it all back together and don't over tighten now look for leaks.

One suggestion, a place that most drains leak is where the drains comes through the sink, so you might tighten the nut that squeezes the rubber washer against the sink, Good luck.

May I add that if it's a new sink you shouldn't need to add silicone, all gaskets should have came with the sink, could be its just not tight enough? Undo the coupler to the pee trap and see if you can get another half turn or turn on the hardware that came with the sink :)

Reno... if you can tell us where it is leaking exactly we can tell you how to repair. See picture below... let us know.

I suspect that you did not add a thread sealer/pipe dope between threads where needed.

Hi MLP:

Thanks... betting onrp6142 or the threads coming through that washer... ;)

Also, could be threads at the tailpiece.

Hope Reno comes back to let us know!

Good day and nice to meet you!

I think that Letmetellu has said this from the very beginning and he has suggested a place that most drains leak is where the drains comes through the sink and that is the gasket RP6142, there is no need for betting money in to it, it is not Los vegas, Mark is the expert and his image is a great help for the new guys, Thanks.

Actually the leak is coming from the both ends of the trap. I tried to tighten it but it still leaks?

Please advise on what to do!

Hi MLP:

Most likely you have placed the rubber washer on the wrong side of the arm...

Look at this picture and tell me if your set up is similar. Check where washers are placed and then check your set up. Also, not a bad idea to add some pipe dope to the threaded joints...

OK did your p trap came with V shaped washer if so, Make sure the "V" shaped washer points downward. No plumber's putty or tape is needed. Check all the nuts to make sure they're tight hand tight then 1/2 turn more with a plier, good luck.
