My friend and I aren't friends anymore. Why? Well, this is what happened:

I always give her rides to tennis class, but her parents work late so they never can give me rides in return. As you all know, gas is very expensive. It wouldn't be so bad if my friend wasn't out of the way when picking her up, but she always IS. So my mother talked to my friend saying, "Gas is very high and I would like you to compensate by giving us $5 for each ride." After this, it was super awkward between us. So the next day, we basically ignored each other. That night, I called her and said that I felt awkward and I didn't know what to say after my mother talked to her, and that I hoped we were still friends. She told me it was no problem. So I thought we were good after this... but we weren't.

The next day she was back to ignoring me and I was back to ignoring her. We aren't friends anymore, and I think it's sad. I really miss her! She was a great friend.

What should I do?

TALK TO HER. If $5 can ruin your friendship and you can't talk about that, then it wasn't a very strong friendship to begin with. Just explain to her that gas is expensive and that you don't mind picking her up, but you can't afford to do it all the time. Tell her this has nothing to do with your friendship, you care for her, and like giving her rides, but can't do it all the time for free.
