I am a B.Tech student in Indian School of Mines University ,Dhanbad ,Jharkhand and pursuing Petroleum Engineering. It was recently ranked 9th in a list of top engineering colleges in India which came out in Outlook. It takes admissions through IIT-JEE.It is the best university in india for an undergraduate course in petroleum engineering.Presently I am in 3rd Semester.I want to do MS in petroleum engineering from abroad but not interested in research.I have an excellent academic record.
I have two main questions:First one is - One thing that constantly nags me is co-cirricular
Activities. At many paces on net I have read that only GRE and good academic record is not sufficient to get admission into a top notch university. Apart from these, the universities also see the extra activities. I want to know what sort of extra skills do they require for one to be regarded as a good candidate. Is it related to the projects that we take up?Since I am in 2nd year ,what sort of activities should I involve myself in so that it will help me applying for the universities?
My second question is-which are the best countries for an MTech course in Petroleum Engineering.

Extra-curricular activities do not have to necessarily pertain to the field of study, but that can certainly be a benefit. They often want to see that you are a well rounded individual, having a variety of interests. If you have any activities relating to your field of study that you have participated in, those would be things to list.
Here is a list from the society of petroleum engineers of universities in various countries to look into: PET Schools List (http://www.spe.org/spe-app/jsp/siteFunctionality/petSchools.jsp)
If you haven't already, you may even want to look into joining.
