His uncle is no relation to you. You have no grounds to fight. Even if you were married, I doubt whether you'd get bereavement leave for the death of your spouses uncle.

You did not say where you live, if in the US very few states reconise common law. And in those that do, or even if you were married, a husbands uncle is often not on the approved list for funeral leave.

If they told you yes, then told you know, you go to HR and see the person who told you yes, or tell them who told you yes.

If it is a small company you go see the owner and ask them what they will do.

Where are you located? I know in my state you could have been told no too if the company didn't want to allow the time off they wouldn't have to. My brother-in law who has been married to my sister-in-law for many years couldn't even get off for her (and my husbands) grandmothers funeral.

I don't believe bereavement leave is mandated by law. Generally its up to individual company policy.

Yes, often they will of course allow you the time off, just not pay it.
