The simplest approach to any task is know exactly where the finish line is. You need to identify WHICH HelpDesk company you want to work for and approach them. Tell them of your interest and ask for a specific list of qualifications.

If you meet those qualifications, you're already in business. You may be surprised as some companies prefer to train astute workers themselves on the all they need to know to serve on their support desk.

If you do not meet those qualifications, the company may provide valuable suggestions on where they would like to see you acquire those skills.

Meanwhile, take the list to a local college or technical school and ask for coursework info on classes to teach you those specific things.

Let the company know you have enrolled in training, and thank them for their help so far. Occasionally stay in contact with them as the training progresses.

When you near completion of your coursework, contact them again letting them know of your soon-to-be-ready self.

Agree 100% with above, get your foot in the door somewhere as a Level 1 tech and with time and continued training you could move up in company employed in to Level 2 etc...

And shown interest in advancement, company may have and provide on the job training as well

Level 1 usually would be support for the new computer user and as levels go up, the support would go onto laptop, LAN/Network etc.. Depending on where you work

Level 3 tech would be able to support any issue that would come into a support center
