I have a 1995 blazer with bad ujoints.I was going to change them but there are no retaining rings on ends, just metal caps.I can't figure out for the life of me how to get them off.And when or if I do get them off,are there grooves in them for the retaining rings I got with the new ones? Thanks for the help... Scott

It's best to use a bearing press to remove them. Otherwise, place them in a large machinist's vise and, using a brass drift and a large pall pein hammer, drive them out. They are tough and can take the punishment. Be sure to grease the new U-joints and drive all of the packing grease out. If you don't, they will shortly fail. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease on such applications. Coat the outside of the new caps with grease to aid installation.

I've always used a torch to heat the yoke and drive the plastic retainer out.
There will be grooves on the new u-joint caps to retain the replacement (that you should get first to see what it looks like)
Then use the press like tx described to reinstall the u-joint to the yokes.
