Exam: First and Second Law of Motion

Use your understanding of Newton's second law and circular motion principles to determine the unknown values in the problems below.

1. A 1.50-kg bucket of water is tied by a rope and whirled in a circle with a radius of 1.00 m. At the top of the circular loop, the speed of the bucket is 4.00 m/s. Determine the acceleration, the net force and the individual force values when the bucket is at the top of the circular loop. At the bottom of the circular loop, the speed of the bucket is 6.00 m/s. Determine the acceleration, the net force and the individual force values when the bucket is at the bottom of the circular loop.

Use your understanding of force as a vector to draw a free-body-diagram of each physical state

2. The following is a view looking down on a puck tied to a string and traveling clockwise in a circle on a slippery surface. Draw the path of the puck if the string breaks at this point in the motion.

3. A pendulum is pictured below swinging through positions 1 to 5. Complete the picture by drawing the force vectors and net force on the bob at each position.

Use your understanding of Newton's laws of motion and friction to answer the problem below.

4. A coin of mass m at rest on a book that has been tilted at an angle with the horizontal. By experimenting, you find that when is increased to 13°, the coin is on the verge of sliding down the book, which means that even a slight increase beyond 13° produces sliding. What is the coefficient of static friction between the coin and the book?
