There is no direct way to convert. You can link to a word document in a powerpoint slide. You can also copy and paste from the Word document to Powerpoint.

Gotcha, Scott! Yes, there is a way, and it's built right into Word.

This works best with a document already formatted in an OUTLINE format in Word, but you can of course try it with any document.
Open the document you want to use to create a PowerPoint presentation
Click on FILE > SEND TO
Select Microsoft PowerPoint
PowerPoint will open and the new presentation will self-format
Save your new PPT file

Ya know I thought of mentioning the outline thing (yes I was aware of it). But it sounded to me like he has a document with words and graphics and wanted to convert that to a slide show. And that just won't convert well.

Hey, now that I'm looking, it's also available from inside PowerPoint:
In PowerPoint, click on FILE > OPEN
In the Files of type box, click All Files
In the File name box, enter the file name and location of the Word document, or navigate to it with the mouse and select it
You can also insert slides from a Word outline into an existing presentation:
In PowerPoint, display the slide after which you want to insert the new slides
Click on INSERT > Slides from Outline
Select the Word document you want to use
