When you say joint are both of your names on the account ? Also how much is left for him to pay it off ? Who were you in contact with about the account ?

Well, sorry to break the bad news but if it is a joint account as in both of your names are on it then the money in that account is as much his as it is yours (according to the law). Therefore they will use the money to pay his back support. If you hadn't put it in there you could have started your own account and all would have been well... but since it is his account too and he owes back support they will take the money owed. If the amount you put in there was over that of what he owed then that amount will still be left.
