Hi there. I live in a very old house with old plumbing. The pipes are probably at least 30 years old.

Anyway, the tip (broach, I believe) of the cold water faucet stem is rusted and I can't get a faucet handle to grip it for any length of time. Do I have any other options but to replace the whole stem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

They make universal handles for your problem,(see images) They come in cross or straight handles. They have a pointy set screw that bites into the stripped spline and secures it tightly. Ask around for Universal Replacement Handles. Your only other option would be to attempt to replace the stem and washer assembly. Good luck, Tom
